In my career as a freelance writer, I have always served as my own editor.  Often times I will write an article, take a break, and then come back and read my article a few more times to try and catch any mistakes that I might have made.  Misspelled words, word usage, etc.  I often think to myself, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a second set of eyes on my writing!”  Of course, the answer is “Yes!”, but I also couldn’t afford the services of a professional editor.  So what’s a girl going to do?  I started poking around and came across an app called Grammarly.  Here’s how it worked for me in my Grammarly review.

What is Grammarly?                                                  Grammarly Logo

Grammarly is a world class software suite that focuses on helping writers of all walks of life perfect their written English.  Grammarly checks well over 250 types of common issues including, grammar, spelling errors, and punctuation mistakes.  Grammarly also provides suggestions to enhance vocabulary usage and makes citation suggestions.

How Much Does It Cost?

Grammarly has a both a free and a premium version of their software.

The premium version has three different pricing levels, depending on your payment plan.

$29.95/month when paid monthly
$19.98/month when paid quarterly ($59.95 per payment)
$11.66/month when paid annually ($139.95 payment)

How Does It Work?

I love how simple it is to use Grammarly.  You install the extension into your web browser and then start typing.  Whether you’re typing an email, blog post, or other content online, Grammarly is always checking your work.  When you type, you’ll see the little green circle start “thinking” as it checks to make sure everything is in order.  If it finds any issues, they get show up as underlined in red.  You can then go highlight the word or phrase and Grammarly will show you the suggested correction.  You can choose to go with their suggestion or ignore what they’ve included.

If you prefer to wait until you’ve completed your typing to check your work, Grammarly will keep track of all of the items at issue both with the underlined words and phrases and with their “item circles” as I like to call them in the Grammarly icon on the page.  The red circle contains a number which keeps track of critical spelling, grammar, and word usage errors, while the yellow circle keeps track of more advanced issues such as passive voice.

When you select an item for review, your text comes up in a “Grammarly editor” where it shows you the suggested corrections along the side.  For more advanced issues, it does not give you the exact wording you should use, but does provide you with insights and explanations on how you can make your writing better.

They even have a plagiarism checker which is meant to help writers determine whether they are writing something someone else has gotten to first.

Where Does It Work?

I’ve personally used Grammarly when writing emails, in blog post editors, and with the Microsoft Office Suite.   Grammarly has an app that allows you to download to Microsoft Word, correcting your document directly in the Word interface.

The Firefox app allows you to use the Grammarly editor in Gmail, WordPress, Linked in and basically anywhere you write on the internet.  I love that I don’t even have to think about it when I’m writing.  It happens automatically!

There is also a windows app that downloads to your desktop and will then work with any documents or projects that you begin on your computer.

Who Does it Work For?

Anyone who writes can benefit from Grammarly.  Students, freelance writers, and academics could all use the services of Grammarly.

Are There Things It Doesn’t Catch? Downsides?

So far I love what Grammarly has to offer.  The only issue I’ve ever had is that sometimes when I’ve copied and pasted a Word document over to a website, it may find an additional item or two for suggested updates.  I love how it double and triple checks what it’s doing so that by the time you submit your final product you can have confidence that it has been thoroughly checked.

What Are Others Saying?

I’ve searched reviews for Grammarly to see what others are saying about the product and the consensus seems to be positive.

Would I Recommend it To Others?

I would definitely recommend Grammarly for those who are looking for a second set of eyes for their writing project.
